What causes acne?
Acne often develops when hair follicles become plugged up by oil and dead skin cells. This can lead to pimples, blackheads, and/or whiteheads developing on the face, shoulders, upper back, and chest. Acne forms in these areas because they have the most sebaceous (oil) glands. Hair is connected to sebaceous glands, and when the follicle wall gets plugged up, whiteheads and blackheads develop.
Blackheads get their color when a pore that’s congested with bacteria and oil is exposed to the air. Blackheads are pores that stay open; whiteheads, on the other hand, are clogged pores that close up. Pimples are the red dots (with the occasional white center) that develop when a blocked hair follicle becomes infected or inflamed with bacteria.
What are the risk factors?
Friction or pressure on the skin
Oily foods do not cause pimples, but some people see breakouts if they spend a lot of time in an enclosed space with a fryer. People of all ages can get acne, but it is more common among teenagers due to hormonal shifts. If both of your parents deal with pimples, you are likely to develop them as well. Stress and friction do not necessarily cause pimples to form, but they may make them worse.
